The statement ‘you are what you eat’ is very apt for describing how what you eat affects your body, your health and your life in general. Healthy food choices can make the difference between maintaining good health and having to deal with medical conditions like obesity, hypertension and diabetes.
It is important that you know the kind of foods to eat, in the right proportion and combination. The kind of food you eat is just as important as the amount. Your daily diet should be simple and varied; it should contain the essential nutrients the body needs.
Nutrients can be classified into water, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins (micro and macro). These nutrients are important because they provide energy, provide materials for growth and body building, repair tissues, sustain the immune system; help the body’s metabolic functions and many other functions. In short, nutrients enable the cells in the body to perform their necessary functions.
Subsequent articles in this series will provide a guide on what food to exclude or include in your diet, and also help you decide the right quantities for each food item. Let’s help get you started on your way to a healthy, fabulous you!
